A High Adventure Program for Catholic Scouts

The Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Diocese of Lafayette sponsor a biannual high adventure program for Catholic Scouts, Explorers and Venture Scouts called the Saint George Trek.

The Saint George Trek takes place biannually at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico .  Located in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, Philmont Scout Ranch provides an high adventure along its hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails.  This, added to the religious, Catholic leadership dimension of the Saint George Trek, provides participants with an unforgettable spiritual experience.  The next trek is scheduled to take place

July 20-August 5, 2009

.

Diocesan Lay CCS Chairpersons and Committee members gather for a photo opportunity in the foreground of  Philmont's "Tooth of Time" during their NCCA training meeting.  The Philmont view is awesome, and stands as one of God's great creations for the enjoyment of Scouts and Scouters from around the world!

ATTENTION CATHOLIC SCOUTS

The Catholic Committee on Scouting of the Diocese of Lafayette, through its affiliation with the National Committee on Scouting, is pleased to offer scholarships to this high-adventure leadership program for older Catholic Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members at Philmont Scout Ranch in northwestern New Mexico July 20-August 5, 2009

The purpose of the St. George Trek is to instill in willing and capable young Scouts the art of leadership, organizational skills and to enhance the Scout’s spirituality.  The trek brings together like-minded youth from throughout the United States to spend twelve days with selected priests and seminarians while backpacking on the trail in the mountain terrain, and in intensive one-on-one conversations between the chaplains and the Scouts in three days of retreat and recollection at the base camp.

In its entirety, the program encourages the integration of morality and values, spirituality, faith, and scripture with the responsibilities of Christian leadership and vocations.  Participants will be asked to carry this meaningful experience home with them and are asked to become leaders of their peers in our diocese.

The Diocese of Lafayette’s Catholic Committee on Scouting is making available two scholarships to the Saint George Trek for qualified Scouts, Explorers, and Venturers.  The scholarships provide payment of the $725 national program fee.  Transportation and incidental expenses are the responsibility of the participant. (If needed, the Catholic Committee on Scouting may be able to arrange monitary assistance to help defray transportation costs.)

Catholic Boy Scouts and Venturers who will be fifteen years of age on or before July 2009 and in High School in the fall of 2009 are eligible to apply. NO exceptions can be made. The Saint George Trek is a one time only experience for youth.  Selection will be made on the basis of demonstrated leadership potential.  Reception of Scouting’s religious emblems and involvement in church, school, and community activities will be considered.  The decision of the screening committee is final.

Application forms and information are available at the Council office, at the Council website [www.eacbsa.org], and at the Catholic Committee on Scouting website [www.cathcomm.net].  Applications may also be received via email from cathcomm@bellsouth.net

This program is sponsored by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting and is designed to encourage the integration of morality and values, spirituality and faith, and the scriptures with the responsibilities of Christian leadership and vocations in the Catholic Church.
